Cumberland, MD – Dr. Jack Arch, 90, of Cumberland passed away on Saturday November, 23, 2019 at Sterling Care in Frostburg, MD. Born February 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Abraham Arch and Lena (Yoffee) Arch Barson. He was also preceded in death by his brother Edward Arch. Recently someone described Jack at 90 living life to the fullest. After graduation from William Penn High 1941, Jack attended University of Pittsburgh graduating in 1953 with a BS Degree as well as DDS degree. After two years in the US Army Dental Corp, he attended graduate courses in New York and Pittsburgh to complete requirements in oral surgery. After 50 years in practice, he retired in 2008. People frequently asked him, "Didn't your father practice on Decatur St.?" He just smiled. Jack was ageless. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Allegany County Dental Association, American School of Oral Surgeons and MD Society of Oral Surgeons. Throughout his life Jack donated his time and effort to community organizations. He was president of Friends Aware for 25 years. He was a member of the Jaycees. He was honored by being voted president of Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. He was the first dentist in the state to hold such a position. His hobbies included antiquing, collecting dental memorabilia and working with stained glass. He donated many creative glass works to charities for fundraising events. He loved playing golf with his friends on Wednesday at the Cumberland Country Club. On Thursdays he looked forward to lunch with the dentist friends. Jack had a wonderful sense of humor. He entertained people with his poetry, shaggy dog stories, and his Amy Black letters to unsuspecting friends. Jack is survived by his wife Valeria. During their 35 years together, they enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and entertaining friends at dinner parties and casual get-togethers. The highlight in August 2018 was celebrating Jack's 89.5 birthday with family and friends. Jack is survived by three daughters: Lynne Arch Sykes and husband, David Sykes; grandson Aaron Sykes and wife Jessica; grandchildren Adrian and Ellery Sykes; Shelley Arch; and Robin Arch McGregor and husband, Mike. Also surviving granddaughter Molly, grandson Jason Sheets and wife Christina; grandchildren Zoe, Mila, and Piper Sheets. "Pop Pop" Jack loved spending time with his loving daughters and beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. His visits to Atlantic City were meaningful for Jack. He will be kept in their hearts and thoughts always. Jack is also survived by his sister, Bernya Lichterman of Harrisburg, PA, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 from 1:00-4:00pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland. A Celebration of Life will follow with Rabbi Mark Perman officiating. A private inurnment will be at MD State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by the Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
