Cumberland—Albert "Al" Richard Shaffer, Jr., 96, of Cumberland, passed away Friday, December 13, 2024 at his home.
Born in Cumberland, MD, on September 16, 1928, he was the son of the late Albert Richard and Dora Ellen (Turner) Shaffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 78 years, Shirley Jean (Sapp) Shaffer.
Al was a 1946 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was employed at C & P Telephone Company for over 40 years.
He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church and coached the church basketball team. He was also a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers. Al was a life member of the Outdoor Club and the Lonaconing Lions Club.
Al is survived by his children, Greg R. Shaffer and wife Linda, Sharon Haines and husband John, Alan L. Shaffer and wife Kathleen, Nancy L. Redman and husband Chas; grandchildren, Roxanne Snyder and husband Rick, Brandy Fisher, John Haines, Jr. and wife Meredith, Erin Denne and husband Nick, Lyndsay Jackson and husband Shawn, Charlee Bezilla and husband, Tyler, and Alec Redman and wife, Lisa; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Josh Snyder, Madelyn and Aubrey Fisher, Bella and John Russell Haines, Sam and Maggie Denne, Keller and Beauregard Albert Jackson and Sophie and Phoebe Redman.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lucas Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Al's name may be directed to the "Fort Hill Scholarship Fund" and mailed to Fort Hill High School, 500 Greenway Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of UPMC Western Maryland Hospice Services – especially Melissa, Kerri, Emily, Elizabeth, and Candy – for their compassionate care during this difficult time.
