Andrew Stasko, MD, 92, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at his home with his family at his side.

Born September 10, 1932, in Johnson City, NY, he was the son of Ukrainian immigrants John Stasko Sr. and Pelahia "Pauline" (Bodnar) Stasko. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Andrew graduated from Johnson City High School in 1950. He was initially employed at his brother Michael's grocery store when his older sisters informed him he was going to college and presented him with three applications. He subsequently graduated Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Cross in 1955. He then attended medical school at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, graduating in 1959. During his third-year obstetrics and gynecology rotation he met the love of his life, Kathryn McTernan RN. They would have celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary this May. He completed his general surgery residency at The Brooklyn Hospital in 1964 and then served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps at Fort Stewart, Georgia through 1966.

Following his Army service he moved to Cumberland, joining the practice of Dr. Carlton Brinsfield, later starting his own practice on Seton Drive in 1971. He was a general surgeon at both Sacred Heart and Memorial Hospitals, serving the community for 33 years, and held leadership positions including surgery department chair. He was also the last Kelly Springfield Cumberland plant physician.

Besides his surgical skill and compassion Andrew is well remembered for his sense of humor and was always ready with a joke from a seemingly endless supply. He was a man of strong Catholic faith and rarely missed Sunday Mass. Always on time, he could occasionally be seen sitting in the family car twenty-five minutes prior to services, engine running, waiting for his family to finally get ready. He enjoyed playing golf with his regular foursome Drs. Gary Wagoner, Jose Valdez, and Uriel Valendia at the Cumberland Country Club. He bowled with the Nineteenth Hole Bowlers during the winter months. He was a lifelong New York Yankees fan, for which his Brooklynite wife and Maryland-raised children forgave him. Andrew told stories of watching through holes in the fence as the Yankees' minor league affiliate Binghamton Triplets played down the street from his boyhood home at Johnson Field. Ultimately, the ushers would let the kids in for free for the late innings. He enjoyed travelling with his wife and daughter and was able to visit the Holy Land, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. He also enjoyed the company of his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Michael and wife Anna, John, Jr., Mary and husband Henry Nebzydoski, Helen, Irene, Joseph and wife Eugenia, Stephen, Nicholas, Anna and Katherine.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Kathryn (McTernan) Stasko, son Andrew J Stasko and wife Rebecca, son Michael Stasko and wife Debra Hurtt, devoted caregiver daughter Kate, and son Thomas and wife Huế. He is also survived by grandchildren Anna, Nicholas, Lily, Charlotte and Andrew as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Drs. Janice Lee and Mary Ann Riley as well as hospice nurses Kerri, Stephanie, and Elizabeth for their care at the end of Andrew's life. The family would also like to thank Kim Delozier RN, Joy Nines and the staff at Devlin Manor second floor for their dedicated care as well.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, on Sunday, April 27,2025 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and then from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a wake service at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 201 N Centre Street, Cumberland.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military Honors with be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 172 Honor Guard.
