CUMBERLAND - Arthur ("Art") Stanley Davis Jr., 94, and his wife of over 70 years, Naoma "Joanne" (Mathews) Davis, 91, both recently passed away in Fredericksburg, VA on March 16, 2021 and April 1, 2021, respectively. Arthur was born in Bronx, New York City, NY on October 22, 1926, he was the son of the late Arthur S. Davis, Sr. and Beatrice M. (Dennis) Davis. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Dr. Thomas E. Davis. Arthur's family moved to Cumberland in June 1941 where he enrolled at Fort Hill High School, graduating with the Class of 1944. He immediately enlisted, as a 17-year-old, in the U.S. Army Air Corp., nine days after the Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy during World War II. Upon completion of Airplane Mechanics school at Keesler Army Airfield in Biloxi, MS, he was deployed to Germany and then France in the months after Germany's surrender in 1945. After completing his military service in Oct. 1946, Arthur attended then received a degree in Mathematics from Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA graduating in May 1950. Joanne was born in Cumberland, MD on December 22, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Richard H. Mathews and Maryland Naoma (Bradour) Mathews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Arthur, and her two sisters, Phyllis (Mathews) Myers and Donna (Mathews) Alexandre. After graduating from Allegany High School in the Class of 1947, Joanne enrolled that summer at Madison College (now James Madison University), Harrisonburg, VA earning a degree in Elementary Education in 1950. Arthur and Joanne were married in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cumberland, MD on August 20, 1950, and after a brief honeymoon, they began their careers as educators for Allegany County Public Schools, with Joanne teaching 5th and 6th grade at Piney Plains School in Little Orleans, MD and Arthur teaching Mathematics at Flintstone High School. Joanne furthered her career teaching 5th grade at Eastside Elementary retiring in 1956 just before the birth of her first of three children. Arthur furthered his teaching career at Fort Hill High School advancing to head of the Math Department. In 1956, Arthur received a master's degree from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV and was subsequently offered a position with Hercules Inc. at Allegany Ballistic Laboratory (ABL). Arthur enjoyed a 30-year career with Hercules, being transferred to Huntsville, AL in 1977, Salt Lake City, UT in 1984, and back to Cumberland in 1985, where he retired in 1986. Arthur and Joanne enjoyed their early retirement travelling the country in their motorhome eventually relocating to Bradenton, FL in 1992 and then Fredericksburg, VA in 2002. Joanne enjoyed many creative ventures. She was employed in sewing and stitching retail shops. She also was a member of several embroidery and needlepoint guilds, and as a master needlecrafter, she created numerous projects through developing her own charts, directions, diagrams and lessons, and traveled as an instructor. Her projects have been presented in needlepoint publications. Arthur and Joanne are survived by their three children, Kenneth A. Davis, Sr., Karen S. (Davis) Uber, and William R. Davis; their four grandchildren, Monica (Davis) Biggs, Kenneth Davis, Jr., Danielle Raymond, Jack Raymond; and great-grandson Dawson Biggs. Joint funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 1601 Frederick St, Cumberland, MD on April 24 at 12:00 p.m. and friends will be received one hour prior. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
