CUMBERLAND -- Barbara Joan Murphy, 89, of Cumberland, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior early Monday morning, Sept. 20, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born at home on Boone Street on July 14, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Anna (Martin) Reuschel and is survived by her husband, John Files Murphy I.
Barbara lived a life of unselfish devotion, ensuring the needs of others were addressed before her own. She was an excellent homemaker and cook, and her greatest joy and accomplishment was becoming a mother, grandmother (known as Gram), and great-grandmother. She invested her life in her faith, family, and friends, and was adored by her family. Her home was the gathering place for summer picnics and family celebrations, which she treasured.
Barbara grew up on Oak Street in Cumberland's South End, where her father operated a small grocery store on First Street. She was a 1950 graduate of Fort Hill High School and worked at Lazarus department store on Baltimore Street before her marriage to John.
Barbara and John met through a social event at St. John's Lutheran Church on Arch Street and were married at that church on July 1, 1956. They raised three children in Cumberland and attended Christ United Methodist Church. Barbara took great joy in creating a loving home for her family and she had especially fond memories of trips out West with John and her kids.
In the 1980s, Barbara and John moved to Barboursville, W.Va., where they attended Lewis Memorial Baptist Church and made lifelong friends. They returned to Cumberland later that decade.
In her later years, Barbara and John enjoyed traveling, particularly to Florida and Branson, Mo. Barbara was known for making a friend anywhere she went and would return home with stories of people she met along the way.
Barbara was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and was active in the Good Samaritans, participating in monthly visitations, devotions, and sing-a-longs with the residents at The Lion's Center. She and John also served as greeters. More recently, she enjoyed feeding and watching birds and other wildlife in the wooded area outside of her home and reading. She also maintained contact with family and friends through writing letters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl John Reuschel, of Newark, Del.
Also surviving are her three children: Cynthia Chisholm and husband, Dr. Roy Chisholm; John Murphy II and wife, Tammy Murphy; and Barbara Chaney and husband, Randall Chaney; all of Cumberland; four granddaughters: Anna Kim and husband Matt, Ruth Chisholm, Savannah Chaney and Jenna Delic and husband Jt; four grandsons: Matthew Murphy, Roy Davies Chisholm and wife Ashley, Andrew Murphy, Jairus Chaney and wife, Bethanie; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Kim; a sister-in-law, Joan Reuschel, of Newark, Del.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who were very special to her. Also surviving are Ruth Ann Hovatter and Kathy Cornwell who were like daughters to her.
Barbara was truly a gift from the Lord, a "people person", the kind of woman who brightened up the room and encouraged those in it, who was ready with a hug or smile just when you needed it. She appreciated the small moments in life and always had a warm welcome for those who visited her home, also known as "Murphy's Inn." To know Barbara was to love her and to love her was to be blessed.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., in Cumberland.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 24, at noon at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 930 Frederick St., with visitation one hour prior at the church.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Salvation Army at 701 E. First Street, Cumberland, MD 21502, in memory of Barbara Murphy.
