Obituary

Barbara Kay "Becky" Twigg, 87, passed away on January 19, 2025, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center on Winifred Road in Cumberland, Maryland.

Born December 3, 1937, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Columbus and Grace Elizabeth Knippenberg Rice. In addition to her parents, Becky was also preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Lewis Paul Twigg; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Zembower, Norma Jane Garland, Ruth Ella Simpson, and Mildred Grace Rice; brothers, Boyd Earl "Bill" Rice, Donald Joseph "Joe" Rice, Ronald Frederick "Pete" Rice, and Stephen Lee Rice, and her son, David Joseph Twigg.

Becky was a 1955 graduate of Fort Hill High School and won a scholarship to Catherman's Business School. She was loyal to Fort Hill and her class and attended every class reunion she could. She worked for C&P Telephone and then took a position as the Office Manager at Children's Medical Group from where she retired after 37 years. After retirement from CMG, she was office manager for Dr. Jean Helz for three years.

Becky was a member of the Cumberland Lion's Club advocating for vision research. She was an early recipient of two corneal transplants from the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In later years, she received one of the first artificial corneal transplants in Boston.

When her children were young, Becky was an involved PTA member taking on various leadership roles. She was a devoted member of the Davis Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and member of the church choir for many years. She was also a hospice volunteer at the Cumberland Memorial Hospital.

She was involved with many family activities, of which going to the beach was her favorite pastime, both at Ocean City, Maryland and Outer Banks, North Carolina. She and Lewie attended every football, soccer, or baseball game and swim meet, and every jazz band concert and marching band performance of their children. After raising her family, Becky and Lewie enjoyed trips to Alaska and the American West. She enjoyed family dinners, and parties, and visiting with her grand and great-grandchildren. Becky was most happy when her family was all together. She remained close friends with co-workers from Children's Medical Group enjoying regular lunches and shopping trips.

Becky is survived by her son, Timothy P. Twigg and wife Wanda Lee (Ruffo) Twigg, Prince Frederick, Maryland; a granddaughter, Rebecca Adams and husband Matt, Darlington, Maryland; and a great-grandson, Duncan.

Becky is also survived by her sister, Donna L. (Rice) Harshberger and husband Dr. Waldo B. Harshberger, Florida; sisters-in-law LeAnn Rice, and Lois Knippenberg, Cumberland; and Mary Rice, Frostburg; daughter-in-law, Paula "Jeanne" Twigg, West Virginia; grandsons Billy (Danielle) and Marcius (Rhiannon) VanMeter, Maryland; and Buddy (Denise) VanMeter, West Virginia; and great-grandchildren Jacob, Taylor, Morgan, and Cole.

The family sincerely thanks the staff at the Cumberland Healthcare Center for their care of Becky over the last year's of her life, and all the family and friends who visited to sit with and care for her.
