Carol Stoops Gray, 88, of Cumberland and Oldtown, MD, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehab.
Born September 2, 1937, in New Brighton, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Burdell and Kathryn Virginia (Naugle) Greer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald F. "Skip" Gray; brother, Cmdr. Richard E. Greer; brother-in-laws, Richard A. Holt and Ben H. Putnam Jr; and father of her children and former husband, James B. Stoops
Carol graduated from Allegany High School in 1955. She worked as the personal secretary for Mrs. Rosenbaum, whom she loved, of Rosenbaum Department Store in Cumberland. After starting her family, she began working again at Sacred Heart Hospital with medical records, was later promoted to be the executive assistant for the hospital president Edward M. Dinan; and worked intensely with the transition to the Western Maryland Health System until her retirement in 1999.
Carol enjoyed taking care of flowers indoor and outdoor, cooking and watching cooking shows, and especially spending time with her family. She was a member of Park Place United Methodist Church.
Carol is survived by her sisters, Naomi Holt and Dorothy Putnam; uncle, Jim Naugle and wife Betty; numerous Naugle and Greer cousins.
She leaves behind her beloved children, Bruce Wayne Stoops and wife Loraine and Suzette (Stoops) Eversole and husband Rick; grandchildren, Tyler Eversole and wife Kimberly, Haley Stoops and fiance Jorden Cruz-Shiring; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Genevieve, Georgia, and one bundle of joy on the way; as well as Paul and Dawson Kuhlman.
She was a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, Janet Holt Jones and husband Chris, John Holt and wife Renee, and Darlene Holt Cosner and husband Tim, and combined children, Casey, Frankie, Avery, Bethany, Connor, Cove, one on the way, Autumn, Shelby, Garrett, Darrin, and Tucker, Lisa, Kelly and Isaiah, and Kristen, and their spouses and families.
She is also survived by step-children, Annette Lynn (Gray) Lindner, who was very helpful with caring for Carol, and husband Royce, and their children, Kassi and Ryan, Carol Ann (Gray) Jackson and husband Barry, Mina Frances (Gray) Harper and husband Sean.
Also surviving are step-grandchildren, Karie, Adam, Amber, Alyssa, Garrett, Cody, Alexis, Laicie, Ezra, and Zephaniah; numerous step-great-grandchildren; and several step-great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Cumberland Community Church on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:30 pm with Pastor Ron Yost officiating.
Interment will be in the MD State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Friends and family are invited to meet at the Cumberland Community Church following the interment for a bereavement luncheon.
