Obituary

Catherine Therese (Madden) McKay, 90, of Cumberland, MD passed away January 29, 2025 at Allegany Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born on November 29, 1934 in Mount Savage, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Robert James Madden and the late Catherine Eleanor (Mattingly) Madden, both of Cumberland. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Kent McKay of Cumberland and her son-in-law, Alan Hughes, of Swindon, Wiltshire, England.

Catherine was a 1952 graduate of Ursuline Academy. She worked in banking for her entire 43 year career, starting at the First Federal Savings and Loan Bank on Baltimore Street, Cumberland, and retiring from the M&T Bank, Baltimore Street, Cumberland. She was Assistant Vice President at the time of her retirement.

She was a devout member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, now Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, and was an active participant in its choir for more than 60 years. She not only loved to sing in the choir, but she also loved to bring choir practice back to her own home, as she would quite often happily sing or hum her favorite songs around the house.

Catherine was also a huge football fan and she enthusiastically supported the Washington Commanders.

After retirement, she was a very active volunteer in the Saints Peter and Paul records office, where she worked on the church's cemetery records.

She was a much-loved wife, mother and grandmother, who was wholeheartedly devoted to her family. She made many sacrifices, all selflessly and without question, to ensure the happiness of her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Celeste Hughes Easingwood, her son-in-law, Mark Easingwood, both of Swindon, Wiltshire, England; her two grandsons, James Hughes of Swindon, Wiltshire, England and Richard Hughes, of London, England; and her sister, Anne Jewell of McKinney, Texas, along with several nieces and nephews.

Catherine has been cremated and the family will receive loved ones and friends at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Maryland on Saturday, February 8th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; followed by Mass of the Christian Burial at Saints Peter and Paul Shrine, 125 Fayette St, Cumberland beginning at 12:00 p.m.
