Charlene Scherer Gilchrist Lelinski, 91, peacefully entered into internal rest on May 3, 2026 in Cumberland, Maryland. Born on October 20, 1934, she was the youngest of daughter of Evelyn Czarnecki and Charles Scherer. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, Anthony J. Lelinski; her daughters, Deborah L. Weaver (Gary) and Cynthia L. Gilchrist; her step children, ToniLyn Marshall (Rich) and Eric Lelinski; grandson, Troy T. Gilchrist (Jan); three great-grandchildren; three great-step-grandchildren and their families; several nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey T. Gilchrist, grandson, Jason T. Gilchrist; sisters, Evelyn Failing and Gwendolyn Welden.
Charlene worked at various jobs while raising her children but eventually settled for full-time employment with the Social Security Office for many years. She was an independent-minded woman with many interests. An avid golfer, she enjoyed her annual visit to Myrtle Beach and golfing with various leagues. She was involved in bowling leagues for most of her life and in later years, enjoyed her knitters group, painting classes, and outings with friends. She was an active, long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, and enjoyed her favorite "duty" creating the flower arrangements for the altar. Charlene also loved traveling across the globe with her children.
The family would like to thank Devlin Manor for their excellent care of Charlene. Personnel were especially kind and attentive to her needs. Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of life on May 21, 2026. Visitation is at 10:30-12:15, followed by the service at 12:30pm at First Presbyterian Church, 11 Washington Street, Cumberland, Maryland 21502. Those wishing to honor her memory many make a donation to the church or to Allegany County Special Olympics c/o Dottie Turner, 218 Shaw St. Frostburg, Maryland 21532.
