Obituary

Charles J. Dressman, Sr. of LaVale, MD, 92, passed away on June 24, 2023 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD.

Charlie was born April 10, 1931 in McKeesport, PA and was the son of Henry and Agnes Dressman also lifelong residents of LaVale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Evelyn; brother-in-law, Joseph Van Horn of Mckeesport; brother, Daniel Doughtery (Jean) of Honolulu, HI.

He attended SS Peter and Paul's elementary school, then graduated from La Salle in 1949. He attended the University of Notre Dame South Bend, Indiana and began a love affair with the school and football team that enriched his life and those who loved him until death. Charlie was the owner and President of Henry Dressman & Sons Custom Home Builders, and he left a legacy of beautiful homes in LaVale and Cumberland. Most prominently off Henry Drive and in Dressman's Addition, two areas named after his father who founded and developed the area.

He married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Mary Louise Firlie, on February 12, 1955 and they were together until her death in May 2016. He was a wonderful father and husband known for his easy smile, affectionate laugh and great sense of humor. Everyone felt comfortable in his presence and welcome in his company. Charlie was an extremely devout Catholic, a member of the Knight of Columbus and usher at his parish. He spent the last ten years of his life passionately involved with the gift shop at the Western Maryland Hospital where he said he knew how much everyone was spending on candy. For most of his adult life, his sanctuary away from home was the Elks Club where he spent many years knocking down duck pins at the bowling alley and sharing lunches and evenings with friends. He was by his own admission "the greatest internet solitaire player in the world."

He is survived by his three children, Charles J. Dressman, Jr. (Diane) San Jose, CA, Cindy Thrasher (Randy) Germantown, MD and Alicia Kuhn (JD) Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Daniel Dressman (Melissa) Lafayette, CA, Brian Dressman (Chrissie) Alamo, CA, Julianne Dressman, Boston, MA, Ryan Kuhn and Laura Kuhn, Washington, DC; four great-grandchildren, Connor and Nate Dressman, Alamo, CA, Henry and Emilia Dressman, Lafayette, CA.

Last but not least he leaves behind his loyal and devoted side kick, George, a small dog he rescued who bought company and joy to him in his final years.
