CUMBERLAND Cmdr. Richard E. Greer, 73, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, November 13, 2018, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.Richard had been a resident of Lions Center. He was born in Cumberland, MD, on July 16, 1945.He was preceded in death by his parents, William B. Greer and Kathryn (Naugle) Greer; a former wife, Patricia (Langley) Greer; and two brother-in-law, Donald "Skip" Gray and Ben H. Putnam, Jr.He is survived by his son, William Greer and wife Megan, Austin, TX; three daughters, Lisa and Brian Calahan, Winslow, ME, Kelly Shields, Great Mills, MD, and Kristin Greer, Solomons, MD; one grandson, Isaiah Shields, Great Mills, MD; and three sisters, Carol S. Gray, Bowmans Addition, Naomi and Dick Holt, LaVale, MD, and Dorothy Putnam, Marietta, OH.Richard served 26 years in the United States Navy with deployment to Patuxent River, MD, Pensacola, FL, Keflavik, Iceland, Jacksonville, FL, Bermuda, and Lajes, Azores. He served two years on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy in numerous positions.After retirement, he continued his education, accepting teaching positions and worked as the Government Program Director with the McDonnell Douglas Plant.Richard was a 60-year member of the Park Place United Methodist Church, where he participated in choir and performed solos. He was also a member of Bulverde United Methodist Church, San Antonio, TX, where he participated in two choirs and numerous musicals.He graduated from Allegany High School in 1963 and loved keeping in touch with his classmates over the years.Richard leaves numerous friends, cousins, nieces and nephews; an aunt, Janet Yandell, Crescent, PA; and uncle, Jim and Betty Naugle, Cottage Grove, OR.Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m.Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. Friends will be received one hour prior to the funeral service.Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
