Daniel F. McMullen, Jr., 94, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
He was born on July 11, 1930, the son of the late Daniel F. and Alice Hanrahan McMullen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anne (Abby) M. Malloy.
He graduated from Cranwell Preparatory School, Lenox, Massachusetts, where he delivered the Salutatory address at his graduation in 1948.
He graduated from Georgetown University in 1952 with a degree in History and Government. He also completed the R.O.T.C. Program while in college. In 1952 he entered the U. S. Air Force with a commission of 2nd Lieutenant. He was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia, where he served in the Korean War as an Intelligence Officer in the Strategic Air Command with the 308th and 2nd Bomb Wings with overseas assignments in England and Sidi Slimane, French Morocco. He left the Air Force in 1954 as a 1st Lieutenant.
In the Fall of 1954, Dan entered the University of Maryland Law School in Baltimore. He graduated in 1957 with an LLB in Law.
In the Fall of 1957, Dan began employment as an attorney in the Tort Section, Civil Division, Department of Justice, in Washington, D.C. In April 1961, he was appointed as an Assistant U. S. Attorney, serving under the leadership of Joseph Tydings, The U. S. Attorney for the State of Maryland. In November 1963, he left the office of the U. S. Attorney and began service with the law firm of Smith, Somerville and Case in Baltimore.
In May 1966, Dan's father died, and he decided to leave Smith, Somerville and Case and return to Cumberland, which he did in July 1966. He practiced law in Cumberland from July 1966, with associates, and individually, until he retired from the active practice of law in 2005.
While practicing law in Cumberland, Dan served as Cumberland Police Magistrate from 1967 to 1970. He was attorney to the Allegany County Board of Education Supervisors from 1971 to 1982; from 1982 to his retirement in 1994, Dan served as Special Counsel to the Maryland State Highway Administration. From 1996 to 2003, he was Chairman of the Board of Property Review for Allegany County, Maryland.
He was President of the Allegany County Company from 1971 to 1972. Dan was a member of the Allegany County Bar Association (President 1985 – 1986), Maryland State and American Bar Association.
He is survived by two nephews, Brother Dennis M. Malloy, Providence, RI, and Sean P. Malloy, Silver Spring, MD; five nieces, Kathleen (Kiki) Beyer, Reynoldsburg, OH, Mary Ann Peer, and Sally Malloy, Ridgeley, WV, Teresa Larkin, Deep Creek Lake, MD, and Vicky Nazelrod, Wilmington, NC; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, May 8, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 N Centre St, Cumberland, on Friday, May 9, at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland. Military Honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
