Darrell Stanley VanMeter, 85, completed his tour of duty on this side of life, Friday morning at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Born on August 13, 1934, in Ridgeley, WV, he was the son of the late Stanley and Goldie (Gaither) VanMeter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby Wilma Moore VanMeter; and daughter, Debby L. Miller. Darrell was a Ridgeley boy who graduated from Ridgeley High school, and played football and participated in boxing. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. Darrell retired after 30 years of giving his back to Kelly Springfield. Acrostic of Darrell: devoted man of God; his life scripture was 1 John 5:12-15. He was and absolute top-notch daddy and pappy "The best"! Darrell was Ruby's angel in disguise and other half of 60 years. He was a reputable, respected, faithful man of honor and integrity. Everyone called him, Dad, Pap, Van or Mr. V. He loved everyone, and loved by everyone. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Darrell D. VanMeter and wife Tammy, PA, Larry S. VanMeter, MD, David G. Shugars and wife Becky, OH, Danny R. Shugars and wife Lois, TX, Michael A. Shugars, PA; daughters, Lori A. VanMeter DeVore and husband Chris, MD, and Glenna E. Kauffman, MD, brother, Robert VanMeter, Frostburg; sister, Sylvia McClellan, LaVale; son-in-law, Terry Miller, PA; 28 grandchildren; double the great-grandchildren; many more great great-grandchildren; as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
