Donald Lawrence
Hawn
Jun 2, 1932 — May 10, 2023
Rawlings, MD – Donald Lawrence Hawn, 90, of Rawlings, passed away on May 10, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.
Donald was born in Garrett County, MD, to the late Meshach Hawn and Leota (McKenzie) Wampler Hawn on June 2, 1932. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elwood Hawn and Harold Hawn; and two sisters, Helen Pape and Shirley Nolan.
He attended high school at Beall. He married Phyllis Hawn on February 12, 1955, in Frostburg, MD. After the wedding, Don and Phil lived in Pontiac, Michigan, where Don worked at the Pontiac Plant. In 1957, Donald and Phyllis moved back to the area and settled in Rawlings, MD. He first worked at Kelly Springfield Tire and then worked as a machinist for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. He retired at the age of 59. After retirement, Don worked many years as a substitute teacher for Allegany County Public Schools.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Army as a sergeant from 1952-1954. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, United Nations Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Beagle Club, Piney Mountain Skeet Club, VFW, and the NRA.
Don had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed skeet shooting, hunting, fishing, traveling, and taking walks in the woods with his family. He loved traveling out west and working in his garden. He had a mischievous sense of humor and was a clever practical joker.
Don's biggest passion in life was the family he created with his "Fuzz." He would give or do anything he could for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all while still having a little humorous fun with them. He was the best husband, dad, pap, and "Dops" and will be greatly missed.
