Doris May Martin Giornesto, 97, of Cumberland passed away Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation, Cumberland, MD.
Born May 6, 1928 in Ashland, Pa, she was the daughter of the late Arthur William Martin and Kathryn Alice (Gahres) Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Giornesto, Jr. in 2001; four brothers, Arthur Gahres, Charles William, Henry Leroy and Robert Elias Martin; her sister, Jean Kathryn Martin Kline; sisters-in-law, Laura Giornesto, Sally Giornesto, Connie Erps, Dona Jean Maynard Martin, Mary Neamtz, Aithra (Vlahapolous) Martin, Genevieve Giornesto, and Josephine Kelly; brothers-in-law, Sam Giornesto, Kenneth Giornesto, Guy Giornesto, Vern Erps, Bill Kifer, Rev. Harold E. Kline, William Kelly, and John Neamtz; and one niece, Marie Sheaffer. Doris was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Mrs. Giornesto was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1946, and in 1950 she received a B.S. Degree in Health and Physical Education from West Chester University, a graduate of Penn State University and Frostburg State College, she obtained Masters Degrees in Health and Physical Education and Elementary Education in 1971, and in Administration and Supervision in 1972. She was a member of the American Association Health and Physical Education, National Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Elementary School Principals, Maryland Association of Elementary School Administrators, Inc., Elementary Principal's Association of Allegany County, Secretary from 1972-1973, President from 1976-1977, Eta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, President from 1974-1976, American Association of University Women, Cumberland branch, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, member of Cumberland Country Club. She was a Physical Ed Teacher at Saxton Liberty High School from 1950-1961, Piedmont High School 1961-1962, Allegany County Elementary Schools 1962-1971, elementary Principal at Ellerslie Elementary 1971-1972, Mt. Royal Elementary from 1972-1976, Cumberland Kindergarten Center from 1976-1977, East Side Elementary School from 1977-1984, Central Office Staff Assisting Supervisor of transportation 1984-1985, Coordinator of Special Services from 1985-1986 and Elementary Principal of John Humbird Elementary School from 1986-1988. She was a member St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Cumberland Country Club where she was President of the Women's Golf Association. She enjoyed reading, bird hunting, and was an avid golfer and bridge player. She and her husband spent every weekend for thirty years taking their Champion Setters and Pointers, which they raised and bred, for Field Trails.
Surviving is one sister-in-law, DoRee Kifer and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Doris was very grateful for the exceptional care given to her by Cyndi Shaffer, Sharon Duke, and others from Comfort Keepers. The staff at Allegany Nursing and Rehabilitation Center also provided her with excellent care during her final days.
Friends will be received in the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, October 23, 2025 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m..
A Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Ryan K. Viands officiating.
