CHARLES TOWN, WV – On June 19, 2020, Doris Jean Reed, of Charles Town, WV, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 88. Doris was born in Springfield, WV, on August 14, 1931, to William Earl Dennison and Dallie Hartman-Dennison. She and her family moved to Cumberland, MD, in 1948. She attended Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, and while living in that area, she met her lifelong sweetheart, Jack Reed, Sr., to whom she was married for 71 years. Jack and Doris had three children, who blessed them with 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. Doris worked for a time at Lazarus Department Store and later at a laboratory at Memorial Hospital, both in Cumberland. She was a devoted mother and although she enjoyed her work, she chose to give up a career to be a stay-at-home mother so that she could care for and support her youngest son. While living in Cumberland, Doris was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. In 1974, she and her husband and their youngest son moved to Huntington, WV, until her husband retired. Upon retirement, for many years Jack and Doris split their time between Altoona, FL, and the Reed family's summer camp on the banks of the Cacapon River, until permanently moving to Charles Town, WV. In her leisure time, Doris enjoyed several things, not the least of which was golf, and while not the greatest golfer she still beat Jack every time. She is survived by her husband, Jack Reed, Sr. of Charles Town, WV; sons, Jack Reed, Jr. and wife Sandy, Charles Town, WV, Brad Reed, Sr. and wife Kiley, Hurricane, WV; son-in-law, Larry Zajdel, Cumberland, MD; grandchildren, Nathan Reed and wife Brandy, Randy Reed and wife Cherie, Katherine R. Zajdel, Rebecca R. Zajdel, Bradley Reed, Jr., and Isaac Reed; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hunter, Eva, Molly, Annabel, Jackson, Fisher, and Michael; siblings, Jerry Dennison and Edgar Dennison. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, William Earl Dennison and Dallie Hartman-Dennison; brothers, James Dennison and Earl Dennison; sister, Esther Dennison; and beloved daughter, Linda Reed-Zajdel. Doris was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. is assisting the family with arrangements.
