Douglas Eugene
Metz
Jan 1, 1940 — Oct 27, 2026
Douglas Eugene Metz Sr., age 86, of Cumberland, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on October 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 1, 1940, in Cumberland, Doug was a lifelong resident known for his kind heart, strong work ethic, loyalty, and devotion to his family.
Doug graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1958, where he was a standout athlete and member of the State Champion basketball team. He also excelled in football, holding the school record for extra points for nearly 30 years. Following graduation, he proudly served two years in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, he purchased his first Volkswagen Beetle, beginning a lifelong love of classic Volkswagens.
Doug worked for the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company for 25 years before spending another 18 years driving trucks for Shamrock and Ward.
A familiar and much-loved presence around Cumberland, Doug was often seen puttering around town in his beloved 1972 red-and-cream Volkswagen Beetle. He was also the neighborhood's unofficial welcome committee, spending time on a bench beneath the large oak tree in his yard. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, attending bluegrass festivals and football games, and, above all, spending time with his family. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and the memories made together will be cherished for generations. As his health declined, his family was grateful for the extra time they shared and the lasting memories they created.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Barbara S. Metz; his children, Melea Brown (Kevin); Douglas Metz Jr.; and Carole Twigg (Kevin). He also leaves behind his beloved granddaughters, Alexandra Brawn (Joe); Rachel Klahre and her partner, Jacob Riis; Kira and Corrina Twigg; and Payton and Miley Metz. He was a proud great-grandfather to Felix and Duncan Brawn and Finnley Riis. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Helen Metz; his siblings, Edmond Metz, Lewis Metz, and Jane Pirolozzi; and his late wife, Mary Lee Callis.
Doug will be remembered for his quiet nature, steady strength, love of classic Volkswagens and the open road, and, most importantly, the love he gave his family. He will be deeply missed, but the memories and laughter he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
At Doug's request, his body will be cremated, and no formal services will be held. His family will gather privately for a celebration of life to honor and remember him.
