Obituary

Douglas Steele Salmon, 76, of LaVale, passed away on December 6, 2024 peacefully at his home.

Born July 26, 1948, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Ralph and Sarah Salmon.

Beloved by Nancy, his wife of 49 years; his sons, Ian Steele Salmon, and Perry Maxfield Salmon and their partners, Emily Green and Michelle Yost; his brothers, Phillip Salmon and Daniel Salmon; and by an extended family with many nieces and nephews.

Douglas Steele Salmon was everyone's cup of tea in the afternoon, when they weren't really sure it was wise.

The understanding, and expression of the human condition was paramount in Doug's life. As the first officially recognized conscientious objector in Montgomery County, MD during the Vietnam war, he began a life of making lives better through both psychiatric care, and art.

At 76, Doug had lived a remarkably full life; studying at various institutions of higher learning, and eventually teaching jewelry and sculpture at Frostburg State University, where he positively influenced numerous successful artists.

Doug's tenure at the Spruce Forest Artisan Village in Grantsville, MD was recognizable by the other undeniably interesting artists, as they inspired each-other throughout the years.

He always seemed to know something, but nothing in particular for sure. Instilling a proper sense of the absurd in all his proteges: Megan, Jen, Michael, Ben, Hannah, Sloane. All have excelled in expression using the skills Doug taught them. Thanks to these remarkable people, Doug's art shall continue to resonate in new, and interesting ways.

Doug was a guy who'd make you roll your eyes in love and silliness. May the man be who he was. May all those who knew him be who you are, just a little bit, thanks to him.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
