Dr. Carl Frederick Slemmer Jr., 90, of LaVale, MD passed away peacefully October 28, 2026 at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehab.
He was born in Cumberland, MD on February 19, 1936 to the late Carl F. Slemmer Sr. and Ida Louise (Underdonk) Wallach. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Lynn Simpson; and step-father, Reynold “Rennie” Wallach.
Carl graduated from Allegany High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1957 and was stationed at El Toro, CA. He attained the rank of Sergeant and served as an air traffic controller in the Philippines and Japan.
An accomplished educator, Carl earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bethany College, his Master of Education degree from Frostburg State University, and his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. He served as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Frostburg State University for 35 years and was recognized as a member of the university’s emeritus faculty. During his time at Frostburg, he played a vital role in establishing the university’s computer science department.
Carl was also deeply involved in his community. His dedication to service extended to the Boy Scouts of America, where he served in local leadership roles for several years. He was an active member of Queen City Lodge No. 131, Ali Ghan Shriners, and the Cumberland Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree KCCH. He was honored as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 2007 and celebrated 50 years of membership in 2016.
Carl had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to joke around, and had just enough stubbornness to keep everyone on their toes.
Carl enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and gardening. He was an excellent singer and shared his love of music through the choir at Centre Street United Methodist Church and a barbershop quartet. One evening after performing with the quartet at his favorite venue, The Blue Noodle Restaurant in Centreville, PA, he proposed to his wife, Karen under an oak tree. The couple later had their wedding rings custom-made with engraved oak leaves, a lasting reminder of that special moment.
Surviving him is his wife of nearly 47 years, Karen Mae Slemmer; his children, Carl “Chuck” Slemmer, Krista Palm and husband Brandon, and Christopher Slemmer and partner Kacia Strous; son-in-law, Bill Simpson and partner Cyndi Flanagan; grandson, Andrew Simpson; granddaughters, Cambryane Slemmer and Makenna Grace Palm; and his extended family and many friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 5th from 11am to 1pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland. At 1pm a Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted by the Queen City Lodge, followed by a funeral service officiated by Pastor Mickey Stephens.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park, Cumberland.
Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 13 Honor Guard.
