FROSTBURG Harry I. Stegmaier, Jr., 74, of Frostburg, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017, at his residence.He was born October 21, 1942, in Cumberland, MD. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry I. Stegmaier, Sr. and Frances V. (Birmingham) Stegmaier.Harry graduated from Saint Fidelis High School Seminary in Herman, PA, in 1960. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Santa Clara University in 1964. He earned his Master of Arts Degree in 1965 and PhD in 1970 (both in History) from the University of Michigan.Harry began his career as a teaching fellow at the University of Michigan while completing his doctorate. He then became an instructor at Eastern Michigan University. In 1970, he began work at Frostburg State University, as an assistant professor, and was received The Teacher of the Year Award in both 1971 and 1972. He progressed to become a well-loved and respected full professor and continued to teach at Frostburg State until his retirement.His major field of teaching was United States history since 1865 with emphasis on 20th century military, diplomatic, and transportation fields. Throughout his career, Harry authored and co-authored numerous publications: Allegany County-a History by Jr. Harry Stegmaier (Author), David M. Dean (Author), Gordon Kershaw (Author), John Wiseman (Author) 1976; A Basic History of World War II: A World in Turmoil, 1919-1945 1988; Twilight of the Monongahela 1994 by Harry and Jim Mullison Stegmaier (Author); Baltimore & Ohio Passenger Service 1945 - 1971 (Vol 1) 1993; Baltimore & Ohio Passenger Service, 1945 - 1971 , (Vol 2) 1997; Chesapeake & Ohio Passenger Cars in Color 2000; Southern Pacific Passenger Train Consists and Cars 1955-58 2001; Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Trains - Consists and Cars - 1952; (Vol 1), East-West Trains 2003; Chesapeake & Ohio Color Pictorial, Vol. 1 1998; Chesapeake & Ohio Color Pictorial, Vol. 2 2005He also wrote a number of train transportation related articles that were published in various magazines.He belonged to a great many professional societies. Harry was a director of the Mid-Atlantic Region Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society from 1982 to 1983, and a chairman of the Bearnarth Memorial Award Committee Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations from 1983 to 1984. He was a member of various college committees including the President of College Forum and Faculty Assembly at Frostburg State University. Harry was director and member of Allegany County, MD Bicentennial Committee, and the trip coordinator for Chessie System steam excursion specials in 1978, 1980, and 1981. Harry was a member of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, the Lexington Group in Transportation History, Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society, and the National Railway Historical Society.Harry was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Frostburg, MD.On a personal level, Harry was a great lover of cats. He was a lifelong follower of all Pittsburgh professional sports teams, as well as University of Michigan teams. Above all, he loved chasing and photographing trains.Harry is survived by two brothers, Mark J. Stegmaier and wife Diane, Denton, TX, and Michael E. Stegmaier and wife Pamela, Rawlings, MD; nephews, James Francis Stegmaier and wife Melanie, Denton, TX, Frederick Joseph Stegmaier and wife Cathy, Linthicum Hts, MD, and Michael S. Stegmaier, Bowling Green, MD; and friend Stephen Roberts, Cumberland, MD.Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD, on Wednesday, February 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, February 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 9 p.m.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of SS Peter and Paul on Friday, February 24, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Greg Chervenak, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
