CUMBERLAND – Duane Edward Smith, 72, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2026, at home.

Born December 16, 1953, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late George Washington and Mary Etta (Haines) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joel, George, and John; two sisters-in-law, Rosie and Sue; one niece, Teresa; one nephew, Justin; three brothers-in-law, Danny Owen, Bill Greise, and Cecil Seal.

Duane was hired as a carman for CSX in 1978 and worked for them until 2006. He enjoyed his music, especially the Beatles, and his movies, especially John Wayne films. He had been in failing health for the last 20 years, of which the past five have been the worst.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda Lea (Cutlip) Smith – their 47th anniversary would have been on June 30th; one brother, David Smith and wife Inis; two sisters, Carol Lee Seal and Julia Owen; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Per his request, he will be cremated, and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
