Born October 16, 1936, in Lonaconing, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph H. and Lucy E. (Bittinger) Goebel. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank W. Goebel.

Ernie grew up in Mt. Savage, MD and graduated from Mt. Savage High School in 1954. Following his graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1954-1958. He was stationed in various locations including Texas, England and Morocco.

He was trained as an electronic technician while serving in the Air Force and used those skills for his entire career. He worked for a number of companies before joining the staff of the University of Maryland, College Park, Physics Department, in 1968. He worked there until his retirement in 1995.

The most important part of Ernie's life was his relationship with the Lord. He made a decision to follow Christ as a young man and he enjoyed sharing the gospel with anyone who would listen. Even in his final days he continued to pray that the people around us would come to know Jesus.

Ernie enjoyed all thing outdoors. He was a biker, hiker and hunter. He would ride his bike every chance he got, including several trips covering the entire C & O Canal. He especially enjoyed a hiking vacation with his son to Yosemite National Park in 2002.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Thelma, of Beltsville, MD; a son, Ernest J. Goebel, Jr. and wife Elaine of Columbia, MD; a daughter, Sheila Goebel of Beltsville, MD; a sister Joan Gerhard, Rawlings, MD; three brothers, Charles Goebel, Michael Goebel, and Richard Goebel, all of Mt.
