Freda May Lafferty, 102, of Cumberland passed away on August 8, 2024 at Allegany Nursing and Rehab.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Robert C. Lafferty, her parents Clarence and Rosalie (Brehm) Shewbridge, her brother Clarence "Shewy" Shewbridge, her sister Hazel Shewbridge, and her sister Ann Shore.

She is survived by her son Robert C. Lafferty Jr. and his wife Natalie, her daughter Joyce A. Cockrum and husband E V "Bud", four grandchildren, Joseph Y. Corley Jr. and wife Alison, Ryan, Nicholas and wife Melissa, and Catherine "Katie" Janev and significant other Will.

She had nine great grandchildren: Gabriella Corley, Brandon Davis, Adeline Davis, Isaac Cyr, Maddie Lafferty, Liam Lafferty, Alice Lafferty, Scarlet Janev, and Samuel Janev.

She had eight nieces and nephews: Debbie (who was like a second daughter), Steve, Mark, Judy, Linda, Kathy, John, and Vicki, and many great nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Vicki and daughter Emma for their help caring for Freda in her later years.

Freda was born on Offutt Street in South Cumberland on May 12, 1922 and grew up in Mexico Farms. She started school attending a one-room schoolhouse in Mexico Farms, then on to Johnson Heights and Fort Hill. As a young woman, she worked at Memorial Hospital, McCrory's Five and Dime, and then the Celanese Plant during WWII. After she married "Bob", she was a full time homemaker and mother the rest of her life. She loved swimming, gardening, yard work, and family gatherings. She especially loved her "home" and neighbors on Oldtown Road.
