Frederick John Hill Jr., 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in Florida. A resident of Cumberland, Fred was born on August 4, 1929 to the late Frederick J. Hill and Rosemary (Carbine) Hill.

Fred, a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, graduated from LaSalle High School in 1948. Following high school, he served in the United States Air Force from 1948-1952, having been honorably discharged and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Fred was a graduate of the School of Consumer Banking at the University of Virginia – McIntire School of Commerce and worked in the banking and insurance industry for over 40 years. In 1994, he retired as Senior Vice President and Partner of Beall, Garner, Screen and Geare, Inc. (BGS&G) after 21 years of service.

Fred is survived by his loving and devoted wife of thirty years Florence "Tootsie" (Buzzard) Hill; one sister, Dr. Rosemary "Kimmie" (Hill) Wittstadt and husband Honorable Gerard Wittstadt (Towson, Maryland); three sons, Frederick J. Hill III (Stuart, Florida), Kevin W. Hill (Cumberland), and Michael P. Hill and wife Jennifer (Annapolis, Maryland); five grandchildren, Kevin W. Hill Jr. and wife Jocelyn, Matthew Hill and wife Tami, Alexander Hill, Nicholas Hill, and Catherine Hill; four great-grandchildren, Bennett Hill, Thomas Hill, Summer Hill, and Caroline Hill; two step-daughters Julie Christopher (daughters McKenzie and Paige) and Tammy Teaford (children Haleigh, Cameron, and Sydney); three nephews, Gerard Wittstadt Jr., Mark Wittstadt, and John Wittstadt; two nieces, Rosemary Padgett and Anne Watson; and close family friend, Kristine Hillyard.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Charlotte (Shumaker) Hill; and one son, Joseph Kent Hill.

Fred loved his family and was profoundly interested in his family heritage, having collected and preserved many family documents and heirlooms dating back hundreds of years. He was an avid reader of United States history. Fred was a proud Maryland sports enthusiast and took pleasure in cheering on the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens. In retirement, he and Tootsie enjoyed spending much of their time in Florida.

Fred was also deeply passionate about Cumberland, Allegany County and the State of Maryland. Fred was the quintessential businessman, active in politics, civics and a longtime volunteer. If there was a need, he was always ready to serve and did so for his community in numerous capacities over his professional career and into retirement. recipient of 1979 Presidential Citation at the White House)

● Special Advisory Committee to the Maryland Department of Economic & Community

Development

● Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (former Chairman)

● Greater Cumberland Committee

● Rocky Gap Foundation (former Vice President)

● Salvation Army Advisory Board (former Chairman)

● Positive Attitudes Change Everything "PACE" (founding committee member)

● Fort Cumberland – George Washington Memorial Sculpture Committee

Friends and family will be received to pay final respects at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Scarpelli Funeral Home in Cumberland. Following the reception, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Catholic Church at 12 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. Inurnment will be private at Maryland Veterans Cemetery – Rocky Gap.
