CUMBERLAND – Gail M. Middleton, 81, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at the Egle Nursing Home and Rehab Center. Born January 23, 1939, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Theodore Sneathen and Hilda Marie (Buskey) Sneathen. She was also preceded in death by her former husband, C. Ray Middleton; sisters, Phyllis Paris and husband Robert, Joann Musgrove and husband Kenneth, and Judy Rice and husband Ronald; brother, Bruce Sneathen and former wife Peggy; and sister-in-law, Martha Sneathen; brothers-in-law, Hervey Middleton and Thomas Albright. Gail is survived by her daughter, Joyce Middleton; her son, Curtis Middleton; her brother, George Sneathen (dec. May 27, 2020); her granddaughter, Destiny Swandol and husband Derrick; her great-grandchildren, Raylan, Layla, and Johnny; and sister-in-law, Irene Albright. Gail was well known as an avid reader, sometimes finishing a book in a day. She loved dancing, walking, pets, flowers, and decorating for each holiday/season. She also enjoyed going for a ride, especially traveling on vacation or to see a show. She worked many jobs during her life and retired as a sales associate from JCPenney. Very important in her life were church, family, and friends. Gail was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. At the church, she was proud to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, lector, and sacristan. She also performed other duties at the church when needed. Gail, when she was able, attended daily mass. Gail was very involved in her children's lives and encouraged and supported their dreams and life goals. Her children's friends and her many nieces and nephews were treated like her own, having a special spot in her heart for babies. Gail never met a stranger, treating friends like family. Over the years, friends were made through church, the local Red Hat Society and HRDC on Virginia Avenue. Special long-time friends included Robert "Bob" Hill, Judy Everhart, Jane Trail, and Angela Hast. Her classmates of St. Mary's 1957 class were like sisters, and they met most months for birthday lunches at favorite restaurants in the area. At Gail's request, she was cremated. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday, July 10, 2020, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 201 N Centre St., Cumberland, on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 10 a.m. Please be aware that the church is operating at 1/3 capacity, and that all attendees must wear a facial covering and practice social distancing. The family would like to express their appreciation to the many medical professionals, hospital and nursing home personnel who provided Gail with special care, especially during the corona virus crisis.
