Garland Mae (Shryock) Athey, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on January 16th at her home while surrounded by loved ones.
Born February 28, 1941, in Oldtown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edward Irving Shryock and Delcie Bell (Buser) Shryock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son William R. Athey Jr., Her brothers Luther P. Shryock, Harold Shryock and Harry J. Shryock, her sister in-laws Althea "Tate" (Nail) Shryock Swisher, Norma (Shaw) Shryock, Barbara (Nelson) Shryock and her brother in-law George Belmont Athey Jr.
Garland was a 1959 Graduate of Flintstone High School. She worked at Alberts Market and S.T. Littles at Christmas time. She and her husband also ran a successful business running school busses in Alleghany Co. for 35 Years.
Garland was an avid gardener and she thoroughly enjoyed fishing with her husband. She loved attending NASCAR races and spending countless summers camping at the beach with her family. Garland and Bill were snowbirds who spent 19 years at their property in Leesburg, Florida where they were accompanied by longtime friends Bill and Susan Seese and Charlie and Dottie Twigg.
Garland is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, William Athey Sr., daughter Debra Athey Wampler, daughter in-law Karen (Booth) Athey, granddaughters Damara Treadwell (Patrick), Skyler Kidwell (Wesley) and Amber Athey (fiance Hunter Schultz), great-grandchildren Kylin, Brooks, Fischer, Luca, Briggs and Lila Mae, her brother Wakeman Shryock, sisters Martha Riley (Dale) and Evelyn Appel (Gary), sister in-law Helga Athey, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
A special thanks to Amy Appel, Patrick Treadwell, and Kevin Shipway for helping during this difficult time. We would also like to thank all the Doctors and staff at both UPMC in Cumberland MD. and Pittsburgh PA.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. A funeral service will be held directly after with Pastor Seth Wharton and Pastor Steve Monington officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Wesley Kidwell, Patrick Treadwell, Hunter Schultz, Corey Fair, Dale Riley Jr., and Shaun Appel.
