Gary O. Smith, Sr., 81, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at UPMC Altoona.

Born in Elkins, WV, on June 5, 1943, he was the son of the late Willard and Edna (Fansler) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wives, Luvina Louise Smith in 2010 and Mary Elizabeth Smith in 2017; and his brothers, Charles Smith and Ben Smith.

Gary graduated from Allegany High School and served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Porter and husband Warren, and Susan Currey; one son, Gary O. Smith Jr.; several step children; two sisters, Marg Young and Brenda "Sue" Helmsteter; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and an extended family with stepchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home at 12 p.m. with Rev. Steve Nelson officiating.

Burial will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, and military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
