CUMBERLAND – George Howard Bartik died Saturday, October 15, 2021, at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, George J. Bartik and Grace E. (Davidson) Bartik. George was born July 28, 1926, in Cumberland. He left Fort Hill High School to join the Navy during WWII as an apprentice seaman and was honorably discharged as a shipfitter 3rd class on February 1, 1946. He proudly served aboard the USS Wautauga AOG-22 in the South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cumberland. He began attending church at the young age of three weeks with his mother and was still regularly attending up until his recent illness. George was a member of the McDonald's coffee crew, who meet every morning to socialize and solve the problems of the world. He was the oldest member of the American Legion Post 13 in Cumberland. George and Vadine loved to travel, by car, bus, ship, or airplane, they would be ready to go. They went on many vacations with family and friends. No matter where they traveled, Myrtle Beach was their favorite destination. They were there countless times over the years, and made many happy memories. He worked for several years at the railroad before starting his career at the Celanese Corporation in 1958. He began as a machinist/millwright, and became a Maintenance Area Supervisor, a job he held until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, O. Vadine (Sybold) Bartik; sons, Frederick H. Bartik and wife, Vicki, Mark Bartik and partner, George Pantalone; granddaughter, Jennifer D. (Bartik) Mathias and wife, Heather; great-grandchildren, Evan S. Twigg, Ava J. Twigg, and step-grandson, Jaredun R. Twigg; sister-in-law, Regina (Sybold) Babylon; nephew, Roy Babylon, Sr.; and Shawn C. Twigg, who thought of George as a father figure. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 20, 2021, 11am to 1pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1pm at the funeral home with Vicar Heather Hill officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Babylon, Sr., Gary Bartik, Evan Twigg, Shawn Twigg, Joseph McIntosh, Gregory Mcelfish, Lesley Mull II, and Thomas Fair, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his honor to St. John's Lutheran Church, 406 Arch Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
