It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George (Mose) Stevens Beal, 82, from Cumberland. He was surrounded by his three sons and their families as he left this world peacefully.

Born Oct. 22, 1940, he was the son of George D. Beal and Glen Rose (Stevens) Beal. He had one sister Carol (Snooky) Kenney, deceased.

George spent his early life in Mount Savage, and was a 1958 graduate from Allegany High School. George served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961, and after his three-year commitment in the Army, he returned to Cumberland. George was an employee of the Cumberland Post Office for 38 years, and retired in 2001. He then worked at the American Legion Post 13 until Feb. of this year.

George married Sharon (Swartley) Beal, in 1962. They had three boys, Todd, Greg, and Eric. Each of his boys had a strong interest in athletics and George made sure to involve all three boys in sports, early. The boys will tell you that George was adamant about them each giving their highest level of effort, and was quick to let them know if their efforts fell short.

George coached many youth ball players in the Cumberland area, and put his energy and efforts into them as if they were his own. He began his baseball coaching career in 1972, coaching for the Pirates in the Dapper Dan, for 11 years and winning the Dapper Dan Championship, in his first season.

In 1981, George took over the American Legion Baseball program and coached some of the best baseball players in the area, doing this alongside some of the best coaches. George often said that it was the players and coaches that made it easy to be successful. George loved the Pittsburgh Pirates and wanted all three boys to be named after Roberto Clemente, which of course, Sherry did not agree. He tried convincing his daughter-in-law, Kim, to name her son Roberto, but was unsuccessful yet again.

George has six grandchildren and was so proud that they each carried on his love of athletics. Todd's son, Zac, and daughter, Katie, were both standout volleyball players in one of the largest high schools, in California. Greg's son Nate, out of Loyola Blakefield, in Towson, was ranked the #1 high school right-handed pitcher in Maryland, by Perfect Game, in 2020, and is a junior at the Wharton School of Business, at the University of Pennsylvania. Nate is a pitcher on the University of Pennsylvania's baseball team. Eric's son, Blake, is graduating with Honors from Mount Saint Mary's University, and was a pitcher during his four-year tenure at the Mount. Blake was the quarterback on the 2018 Fort Hill Maryland State Championship football team and made All-Area in three sports while at Fort Hill. Eric's daughter, Olivia, is a freshman at Frostburg State University and is a member of the track and field and cross-country teams. Olivia and her 800-relay team, at Fort Hill, finished fifth in the Maryland State Championship. Finally, Eric's daughter, Macie, George's youngest grandchild, is only nine years old, but already showing her athleticism in lacrosse and soccer. George's love of sports is alive and well with his grandchildren.

George is survived by Sherry, his wife of 42 years, recently reconnecting and building a new friendship while each were living at Lions Manor the past three months.

George is survived by three sons, Todd, of Bismarck, N.D., Greg, and his wife, Jodi, of Westminster, and Eric, and his wife, Kim, of Cumberland. He is survived by six grandchildren, Zac, and his wife, Emily, of Las Vegas, Nev., Katie, of San Antonio, Texas, Nate, of Westminster, and Blake, Olivia, and Macie, of Cumberland.
