George C. Charuhas, 78, passed away on August 16, 2020, due to complications from heart disease. Born on August 15, 1942 to Christ and Theresa Charuhas, George grew up in Cumberland, MD, and went to Allegany High School. After graduation, he attended Washington College and received a degree in Political Science. Moving back to Cumberland after graduation, George became the program director at The Central YMCA where he coached a youth swim program and on his off time was a proud member of the local EMT team. After settling down in LaVale, MD, George went to work for the State of Maryland and spent his career travelling across the state in land acquisitions. He was well-known for and loved singing at church and for friends' celebrations and was an avid cook and baker. A child at heart himself, George also loved children, especially his nieces and nephew and was godfather to many of his friends' children. One of his favorite activities was sitting down on Christmas Eve and calling a long list of children making sure they received a call from Santa Claus complete with a list of toys each child was wishing for that year. George is survived by his sister Stavroula Christina Wahl, his brother Peter and sister-in-law Patricia, and his nieces Elaina Wahl-Temple, Stephanie Wahl, and Patricia Meyers and his nephew Christopher Charuhas. In accordance with his wishes, George's body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, MD, on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vicki Hamel officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior. Social distancing and masks are required. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend.
