George Joseph
Sellers
Dec 10, 1938 — May 29, 2026
George Joseph Sellers, 87, passed away on May 29, 2026, at UPMC, Western, MD, surrounded by his family. Born on December 10, 1938, in Chicago, IL to the late Marian (Dvorak) and George Raymond Sellers. George is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Lerch and her husband, Robert.
George J. Sellers was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1938 and raised in the suburbs, where he graduated from Morton High School in 1956 and from the University of Illinois in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. As a youth, George's first job was with his father's photography business.
After university, George moved to Cumberland, Maryland in 1961 and worked for Hercules at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) as a Chemical Engineer for 29 years.
In 1965, George met Barbara Chodakowski, a history teacher, in New York and following a long-distance courtship they married in July 1966.
George and Barbara built their life in Cumberland, where they also built their dream house and welcomed 4 children over 11 years. George loved being a father, and eventual grandfather, sharing many science experiments with each of his children and grandchildren, going to school plays, dance recitals, and participating in many scouting events.
George and Barbara started a side business in 1981, Computer Consultants to Business (CCB). After George's retirement from ABL, in 1990, he continued his computer business until he decided to fully retire in late 2006.
George's experience in his father's photography business inspired his greatest hobby, tracing his family's genealogy, as well as Barbara's side. Often the one with the camera, George captured the great moments and the quiet ones on film over the years. George spent his retirement cataloging countless photos from multiple generations of the family, digitizing photos and films, so they could be passed on to the next generation.
George was a man of science but also chose the Catholic faith as an adult and had an unwavering belief in God. George would often reference Romans 8:31, "If God is for you, who could be against you?" In his gentle way, he would encourage non-believers to seek out God, because everyone's path to God is different and maybe they just hadn't encountered Him yet.
George is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara D. (Chodakowski) Sellers; son, George Walter Sellers and his wife, Dr. Jenn Sellers; daughters, Dorothy Sellers and her husband, Tarik Benkirane, Molly Sellers, and Deborah Sellers; grandchildren, Nidal Benkirane, George Shuangxi Sellers, Ann Michelle Sellers, and Nabil Benkirane; sister, Sue Ann MacDonald and her husband, Les; and brother in law, John Fierro; also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received on Sunday, June 7th from 5:00 pm- 8:00 pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, MD 21502. An additional visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, June 8th from 10:00 am-11:00 am. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 N.
