Obituary

RIDGELEY, WV George Winfred Jones, 89, of Ridgeley, WV, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, at Dawn View Center in Fort Ashby, WV.Born January 29, 1927, in Rosebud, AR, he was the son of the late Cody Wiley and Icie Iona (Parker) Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Champine, AR; and brother, Harvey Parnell Jones, AR.George enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944. During World War II, he received the American Area Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. He even received a personalized letter from President Harry Truman expressing his appreciation to George for his service to his country. After the war, George worked on a pipeline in Petersburg, WV, where he met his wife Alice (Evans) Jones. He and Alice shared a love that some would describe as "unreal." George requested his wife to be by his side until his last breath. He was also a brick layer for many different contractors. Later in life, George enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, especially John Patrick, his favorite fishing buddy. George lived for his children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful, kindhearted provider who loved nothing more than living up to the titles father and grandfather.He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Alice (Evans) Jones; daughters, Vicki McCullough and husband John of Wiley Ford, and Rebecca Ann Shanholtz, Ft. Ashby; grandchildren, Julie Hill and husband Brian, Jonie Abe and husband Scott, Jamie Hancock and husband Todd, John Patrick McCullough and wife Alice, and Eric Jones; great-grandchildren, Brian Scott, Brooke, Jordan, Savannah, Cheyenne, Noah, Greenlee, Isabella, and Jett; great-great-grandchildren, Maddie, Beckham, Jakob, Lena, and Casey; and nephew, Barry Champine. George is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.George will be sadly missed by all members of his family.Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday, January 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, January 9, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Butch Shaffer officiating. Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.Pallbearers will be John Patrick McCullough, Scott Abe, Brian Hill, Brian Scott Hill, Noah Abe, and Todd Hancock.Memorial donations may be made to DAV Disabled American Veterans, P.O.
