OLDTOWN Gilbert L. "Gib " Zimmerman went to be with his Jesus on Saturday, April 13, 2019. He was born September 5, 1932 to Eugene Lawrence and Maebelle Fern Zimmerman.To all who knew him best, Gib was a hard worker who put his family above anything and everything here on earth, but especially his beloved wife to whom he was married for 66 years. Although he was a private man, his family recognized his genuine relationship with the Lord. Before leaving his home, on the day he entered the hospital (and then the nursing home) for his final battle with Parkinson's disease, he declared his faith to his family. He suddenly brightened up after days of being listless and affirmed, "I'm going to be with my Jesus."Gib married Rebecca "Toots" Smith Zimmerman on May 8, 1953, and together they raised their three children. Gib attended Oldtown High School, and after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he worked as a machinist, having previously completed an apprenticeship at Sparrows Point. After serving a three year stint in service, Gib lived and worked in both Kentucky and Baltimore. He later moved back to Oldtown, where he spent the remainder of his years dedicating his life to caring for his family. During these years, he worked as a machinist at the B&O Railroad, the ABL, and finally the Kelly Springfield Tire company.Gib was also very devoted to the Oldtown United Methodist Church of which he was a 50 year member, and he felt a special bond with his "church family" throughout the years.He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Maebelle Zimmerman, as well as his younger brother Kenneth Zimmerman.Gib's family was precious to him. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Rebecca Zimmerman as well as his children, Stephen Zimmerman and wife Jane, Myra Cockrum and friend Mike, and Laurie George. In addition, he also has 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.Gib was loved by many and will be sorely missed, especially by his family who adored him. A celebration of Gib's life will be held at Oldtown United Methodist church on Tuesday, April 16, 2019. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. will be assisting with the arrangements. A viewing will be held from 10:00 am til 12:00 pm at the church with the funeral following immediately afterward. Interment will be at the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
