CUMBERLAND – Gladys M. (Hite) Appel, 91, of Cumberland, formerly of Cresaptown, passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born October 1, 1929, in Cresaptown, she was a daughter of the late Frank W. and Myrtle N. (Winters) Hite. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Paul J. Appel; adoring son, Randy L. Appel; and all of her siblings: sisters, Lucy Cashman, Hazel Custer, Edna Halle, Ada Boor; brothers, Melvin Hite and Thomas Hite. Gladys worked at the Celanese, and in her spare time she enjoyed gardening, traveling, and playing bingo. Most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Gladys leaves behind her loving son, Paul J. "Joe" Appel, Jr. and partner, Ron Stair; sister-in-law, Marion Hite; and numerous nieces and nephews, especially Patty Maddy, Carolyn Meagher, LaDonna Long, and JoAnn Cashman. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 10am to 12pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12pm with Pastor Tim McGregor officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
