Obituary

Harry William Hobell, 91, of Cumberland, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on October 1, 1935, in Cumberland, Maryland, Harry was the son of the late Harry and Stella (Kocay) Hobell. In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 36 years, Bessie Hobell; his sister, Harriet; and his longtime companion, Rosalie Thomas.

He was a graduate of LaSalle High School and went on to build a long and dedicated career with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, later Chessie System and CSX, where he worked as a carman. Throughout his years on the railroad, Harry formed many lifelong friendships that he continued to treasure long after his retirement.

Harry also proudly served on the Supervisory Committee of Chessie Federal Credit Union, a responsibility he approached with great dedication and pride. He looked forward to the monthly meetings, gatherings, and opportunities to spend time with his Chessie "family." More than a position, his involvement with Chessie provided him with a lasting sense of purpose, belonging, and friendship.

Harry was a kind and gentle man whose quiet presence and unconditional love left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. A man of few words, he possessed a wonderful sense of humor, a playful spirit, and a heart full of love. His beautiful, twinkling blue eyes often said more than words ever could. He was a steady and reassuring presence, someone who could always be counted on, and whose loyalty and devotion to those he loved never wavered.

Anyone who knew Harry knew that one of his greatest joys was music. Music brought him happiness, but dancing truly brought him to life. If there was music playing and a dance floor nearby, you could be certain that was where you would find Harry. Whether dancing with someone he loved or simply enjoying a familiar song, those moments captured the joy and warmth that were so much a part of who he was.

Above all else, family was the center of Harry's world. He shared 36 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bessie, with whom he built a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories.

Harry is survived by his three daughters, Krista Durst (John "Jay" Durst), Linda Llewellyn, and Judith Wray (Thomas Wray).

He especially treasured being "Pap" to his five grandchildren, Lauren Yoder (Jared Yoder), Kelsie Hayes-Fine (Justin Fine), Travis Wray (Debbie Wray), Austin Wray (Dina Anchin), and Alex Llewellyn (Shawn Staub), and "Pap-Pap" to his five great-grandchildren, Olive, Lenny, Everest, Hila, and Juniper. These were titles he wore with tremendous pride. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and the love he had for each of them was evident in the quiet, steadfast way he showed up throughout their lives.

Harry also leaves behind his very special cousin, Norma Jean Clark, who was more like a sister to him. Their lifelong bond was a treasured part of his life. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, who affectionately referred to him by his enduring nickname "Brother".

Beyond his immediate family, Harry was fortunate to be surrounded by a remarkable circle of friends and loved ones. His fellow members of the Chessie Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee held a particularly special place in his heart. Through their years together, Harry found not only meaningful work but also enduring friendships, companionship, and unwavering support.

The family would also like to recognize the family of Rosalie Thomas, who welcomed Harry as one of their own and surrounded him with love, kindness, and support, particularly throughout the past year. Special gratitude is extended to Jim "Hum" and Reba Niland, whose extraordinary compassion, friendship, and devotion to Harry meant more than words can express.

Harry's legacy will not be measured by the number of words he spoke, but by the love he gave, the kindness he showed, and the countless memories he leaves behind. His family will forever cherish his gentle spirit, his quiet strength, his playful sense of humor, those beautiful twinkling blue eyes, and the comfort of knowing he was always there when they needed him.

While his family will miss him beyond words, there is comfort in imagining Harry reunited with his beloved Bessie, a familiar song beginning to play, and the two of them finding their way to the dance floor once more.

And although the music here on earth may have ended, the love and memories will play on forever.

Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Sunday, November 8, 2026 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Beginning at 6:00 pm family and friends will be invited to share memories of Harry.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Rd, Cumberland on Monday, November 9, 2026 at 11:00 am with Fr. Ryan Schmeltzer, OFM Cap. officiating.

Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jared Yoder, Justin Fine, Austin Wray, Travis Wray, Alex Llewellyn, and Jim "Hum" Niland.

Harry's family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of UPMC Western Maryland for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Harry and his loved ones.

Throughout his care, Harry was treated with dignity, respect, and genuine compassion. The patience, understanding, and support extended to his family during such a difficult time provided comfort when it was needed most.

To everyone who cared for Harry and helped his family navigate his final days, your kindness made a lasting difference and will never be forgotten. For that, we are forever grateful.
