Cumberland—Helen Lee Auvil, 79, of Cumberland passed away on Friday, April 3, 2020 at the Lions Center as a result of Alzheimer's disease. Helen was born in Cumberland, MD on August 20, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Cora Canelia (Gant) Bowles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, James Christopher Auvil; sisters, Dolores I. Hardman and husband Blair, Phyllis Bowles, and Eloise Wiley and husband Olin. Helen was a graduate of Fort Hill High School class of 1958. Following high school, Helen moved to Washington, DC where she work as the secretary for the President of the International Asbestos Union. Upon returning to Cumberland, Helen became the Business Manager for the Cumberland Nursing Center. Helen ended her career by becoming the Office Manager for the Livingstone Church of the Brethren. Helen was an active member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Cumberland. After the church closing, Helen became a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church. Helen is survived by her husband of 51 years James E. Auvil, son, Jonathan Auvil and wife Dana, Tallahassee, Florida; grandchildren, Isabel, Elena, and Alex. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. At Helen's request, she will be cremated. Because of the Health related issues there will be no visitation or funeral service. She will be inurned at Restlawn Memorial Park.
