Helen M. Cumpston, 97, passed away September 16, 2023 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Cumberland, MD, with her daughter at her side.
She was predeceased by her husband, Russell G Cumpston; son, Rick G Cumpston; parents, James and Lily (Roupe) Phillips; half- brother, George Masters; brother, Raymond Phillips; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Rose Phillips; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Lucille (Cumpston) Bartrug; brother-in-law, Bud Cosgray; sister-in-law, Nancy (Cumpston) Moore; and brother-in-law, Terry Bowman.
She is survived by son, Randy (Stephanie) Cumpston, Richmond, VA; daughter, Sandy (Larry) Mackereth, Cumberland, MD; daughter-in-law, Connie Myers, Spotsylvania, VA; son-in-law, Dave (Cathy) Duncan, LaVale, MD; grandsons, Ben (Kristine) Duncan, Cresaptown, MD and Andrew (Sarah) Duncan, Richmond, VA; granddaughters, Noelle (Buck) Sutton, Spotsylvania, VA, Melissa (Reggie) Richardson, Stafford, VA, Kate (Andrew) Fulton, Annandale, VA and Laural Mackereth, Rockville, MD; great-grandchildren, Kayla Loibel, Zoe Cumpston, Connor Duncan, LB Sutton, Campbell Duncan, Ann Peyton Duncan, Aniyah Alvey and Adalyn Alvey; and great-great grandson, Weston Winn. She also leaves behind many special nieces and nephews who were a big part of her life and brought her lots of joy.
Mrs. Cumpston worked in the tin mill at Weirton Steel prior to becoming a full-time wife and mother. She was active in the PTA, Band Boosters, 4-H Club and the Church of Christ. Known for her excellent cooking and baking capabilities, no one ever left her home hungry. She loved the outdoors, especially gardening. She was a kind, gentle and hard-working woman who always helped family, neighbors or anyone in need. Her family would say she was the strongest person they ever knew.

Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home at 15205 McMullen Highway SW, Cresaptown, MD on Friday September 22, 2023 from 11:00-12:30. Rev. Steve Hershberger will officiate the funeral service immediately following the viewing. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park on Bedford Road, Cumberland, MD.
