CUMBERLAND – Herbert Otis "Butch" Lewis, 74, went home to be with the Lord on March 31, 2023 at Peace Healthcare Mountain City Nursing and Rehab in Frostburg, Maryland.

Born on November 17, 1948, he was the tenth child of the late Gerald and Ruth (Howdershell) Lewis. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Harold Lewis (infant), Andrew J. "Andy" Lewis, Ronald C. Lewis, James F. Lewis and Geraldine (Lewis) Taylor.

Butch graduated in 1965 from Fort Hill High School and began work as a dispatcher for the Maryland State Police in the Baltimore area. He eventually made his way to Nashville, Tennessee and worked at United Records Company where he met many record producers and artists. He was a fan of country music, writing and co-writing many songs with his brother, Tom. The one song in particular he said people asked about was "Moorefield," which was popular in the area since it was about the town of Moorefield, West Virginia. He and his brother, Tom, would attend the Grand Ole Opry and visit with the stars backstage. Butch became acquainted with Charlie Louvin of the Louvin Brothers. Mr. Louvin offered him a job as his security guard, but Butch had a desire to become a long-haul truck driver and travel throughout the United States. After the company was sold, Butch entered training and throughout his long career as a trucker, he traveled to Canada, Mexico and every state multiple times, except Alaska and Hawaii. His family and friends loved the stories he told of people he met and various foods he enjoyed during his ventures. After a lengthy career, he retired from Celadon Trucking and returned to Cumberland, Maryland. Butch had a wonderful sense of humor and spoke kindly about everyone.

He is survived by his sons, Michael J. Lewis (Angela) of Wapakoneta, Ohio and Mathieu J. Lewis (Kristen) of Fallston, Maryland; granddaughters, Grace, Bridgette, Isabel, and Mercedes Lewis; grandsons, Joseph and Elijah Lewis; siblings, Dorie Duncan of Shaft, Maryland, Jenny Lewis of Bedford, Pennsylvania, Patti McTaggart of Bedford, Pennsylvania and Tom Lewis (Elise) of Humble, Texas. He also has many nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins who will miss him. Additionally, he enjoyed the friendships shared with Don Appold and Jim Malloy.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted the following day, Thursday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. with nephew, Pastor Kirk McTaggart, officiating. No graveside services will be held.

The family extends a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Peace Healthcare at Mountain City Nursing and Rehab Facility for their professionalism, courtesy, and compassion given to Butch. He thoroughly enjoyed teasing the nurses and CNAs and knew he could count on them.
