Irene Mary Hughes, 94, of Cumberland, Maryland died Sunday February 6th, 2022 after a very brief illness. Irene was born in Ford City, Pennsylvania, daughter of Steve and Anastasia (Vasek) Ganzlmar. She graduated from Ford City High School and then earned a bachelor's degree from Westminster College, where she also met the love of her life, Harry. After moving to Maryland (Harry's job with PPG was transferred), she received a master's degree from Frostburg State University (MD). Before settling into a long teaching career, Irene had several interesting jobs, including: telephone operator, butcher (she and Harry owned a butcher shop for a few years), bartender (the tavern was a family business), and she even worked in a distillery! She spent most of her career teaching at Mount Savage School in Maryland. Irene was a devout Catholic, member of Our Lady of the Mountains parish, and never missed mass. She was also a huge Steelers fan, and never missed watching a game. Most folks might have known her as their school teacher or a great neighbor that was always baking, but many knew her as a great golfer (her name was often in the paper for some golf-related win), water skier (taught many, many folks to ski at "the camp"--the family cabin on the Allegheny River), fisherman (including frequent trips to an off-grid outfitter in Canada), bowler (various leagues), swimmer, card player, and joke teller. Irene was quite a tomboy, and she was very proud of it. She loved all animals, but especially her Labrador retrievers. She was never without a black lab since her youth. Irene is survived by her son Harry Hughes, III, and his wife Laura, and their children Catherine Hughes and Daniel Hughes; her daughter-in-law Karen Hughes and her children Sarah (Hughes) Rapp (husband Denver) and Erin Hughes (fiancé Will Fink). She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Harry Hughes, Jr., and her son Steven H. Hughes. As per her wishes, Irene will be cremated and interred next to her husband at the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
