Cumberland— Jack Elwood Peterson, 95, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2024 at his home.
Born in Cumberland on May 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Peter and Leora (Coughenour) Peterson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Samuel and wife Helen, Estel and wife Mildred, Clarence Sr. and wife Margaret "Tootie", Macklin Peterson and A. Guy Peterson and wife Laura Ann; five sisters, Laverna "Isabel" Thompson and husband Harold, Betty Seltzer and husband Charles, Anna C. Peterson and Theona Peterson; and Doris M. Peterson; nephew, Clarence "Boe" Peterson, Jr.; and Jack's life partner, Alma Brown. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School. Jack served in the US Army in the Korean War. He was very proud to have served his country and proud to be a Korean War Vet. He retired from Potomac Farms Dairy. Jack was a very loving and caring person. He was like a surrogate grandparent to many of his great nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, on Sunday, September 15, from 5:00 until 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held Monday, September 16 at noon with Rev. Harold R. McClay, Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
In honor of Jack's memory, donations may be sent to the American Legion Post 13 Honor Guard, 206 East Harrison St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
