Obituary

Charles Town, WV – Jack R. Reed, Sr., 94, of Charles Town, WV, formerly of Cumberland, MD, died November 27, 2023.

Born in Cumberland, on June 13, 1929, he was the son of the late William and Lula (Cunningham) Reed.

Jack graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1947. That same year he began working for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, first as a clerk, then eventually retiring as superintendent in Huntington, WV.

On Valentine's Day 1949, he married the "girl next door," Doris. They had a wonderful, loving relationship and were married for 71 years. They had three children, Jack Jr., Linda, and Bradley.

While living in Cumberland, Jack was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a longtime member of Potomac Lodge A.F.A.M. and was proud to serve as Worshipful Master in 1961.

Aside from his family, Jack's greatest love was horse racing, followed closely by baseball. He had many great stories about cutting high school classes and going to the old Cumberland race track at Fairgo. Jack lobbied the Cumberland City Fathers, and in the mid-1940s helped to establish the first organized baseball league in the city. This later became known as the "Rec League."

His real passion was his camp on the CaCapon River near Largent, WV. A self-taught carpenter, he built the camp together with Doris, one board at a time. After his many remodeling jobs, his camp is still enjoyed four generations later.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Doris (Dennison) Reed; and his daughter, Linda (Reed) Zajdel. He was the last of his parents' family as he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roy J. Reed, William E. Reed, Harry Vernon Reed, and Donald E. Reed; and one sister, Shirley L. Raupach.

He is survived by his two sons, Jack R. Reed, Jr. and wife Sandra, of Charles Town, and Bradley R. Reed and wife Kiley, of Hurricane, WV; son-in-law, Larry Zajdel, of Cumberland; four grandsons, Nathan, Randy, Bradley, and Isaac Reed; two granddaughters, Katherine and Rebecca Zajdel; nine great-grandchildren.
