RIDGELEY – James B. "Jim" Stoops, 89, of Ridgeley, WV, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Devlin Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born March 5, 1934, in Greenwich, OH, he was a son of the late John Stoops and Naomi (Samuels) Stoops Lawson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Larry and David Stoops.

Jim was a 1953 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He went on to serve his country in the Army from 1953-1955. He then became a member of the Marine Corp Reserves and the Cumberland Auxiliary Police.

He was employed by Sacred Heart Hospital for a time, but was a well-known salesman for Goldsmith-Black for many years. Jim was a trustee at Park Place United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club.

Jim was an avid Fort Hill football fan who loved fishing and his family.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Janet L. (DeLozier) Stoops; children, Bruce Stoops and wife, Lorraine, and Suzette Eversole and husband, Rick; stepchildren, Glenda Appel and husband, Brian, Susan Pryor and significant other, Tommy Robinette, Jill Brooks, and Tonya Bennett and husband, Christopher; brother, Dennis Stoops and wife, Alice; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, September 11, 2023, from 11am to 1pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1pm with Rev. Charles Riggleman officiating. Interment will be in MD State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
