Obituary

Ridgeley – Janice Lynne Carder, 66, of Ridgeley, was welcomed into heaven by her Savior and her family on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at the Cumberland Healthcare Center.

Born May 10, 1958, in Cumberland, she lived her whole life in Ridgeley. She was especially proud to be a member of the last graduating class of Ridgeley High School in 1976. Janice was a member of the high school band and was president of the Future Homemakers of America for two years. Also, during the years after graduation she was honorary class president.

Janice was preceded in death by her loving parents, Calvin M. Carder and Lillian Kathleen (Hare) Carder as well as her best friend and sister, Joyce Elaine Carder Sterner; paternal grandparents Thomas and Elma Carder and maternal grandparents John and Emma Hare.

She was employed as a legal secretary, clerk at the B&O Railroad, secretary at Home Beneficial Life Insurance, and librarian for the Allegany County Library System. She was a voracious reader who never met a book she didn't love.

Janice was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Methodist Church, Humbird St., Cumberland, from the Cradle Role.

She loved her yearly voyages on the Mississippi River on the American Queen. She made many friends though the years on board, both passengers and crew members.

Janice spent many happy hours at her sewing machine making quilts for herself, family, and friends. She was a member of Creative Needles Quilters.

She leaves behind her faithful furry companions, her cats Pumpkin and Princess; many cousins and friends – too many of each to name; special step-niece, Kim Sterner Long; and a special friend since age 5, Susan Wagner Hedrick.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 11am to 1pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1pm with Pastor Marshal Carder officiating.

Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Points, WV.
