Obituary

John Philip "Phil" Crippen, 73, of Cumberland, MD passed away peacefully in his home surround by family on April 23, 2025.

Born on July 18, 1951, in Cumberland, MD, Phil was the son of the late Mary Jane (McDermott) and Edward E. Crippen Sr.; in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Julie Connelley.

Phil was a 1969 graduate of Fort Hill High School. After graduation, Phil worked briefly for the Social Security Administration before starting his own construction company in 1973. He owned and operated Crippen Construction for over 50 years, until his retirement. Phil was also a property manager for WDS Realty, and a member of Cumberland MD's Zoning Board of Appeals.

Phil was a licensed pilot, learning how to fly at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport. In his earlier years, Phil enjoyed going to his camp in Harper's Ferry WV, where he would water ski and spend time on the water. Phil enjoyed restoring his 1952 Willy's Jeep, going on cruises, and always looked forward to his annual trips to Fort Myers, Florida. Phil's best memories were created when surrounded by friends and family at his pool, where he was always making everyone laugh and ensuring they had a good time.

He was a member of numerous social clubs in the area, including the Knights of Columbus, the Goodfellowship Club, and the Democrat Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Diane (Bridges) Crippen; two children, Derek Philip Crippen and wife Jennifer, and Ryan William Crippen; his grandson, Peyton Philip Crippen; two siblings, Nancy Madison, Edward Crippen and wife Evie; uncle, James Crites; and lifelong friends, Don and Ron Miller; a large extended family; and his son's dog, Myers.

A special thank you to Suzy Macy, Tricia Golden, Tracy Bridges, and the team at UPMC Western Maryland Hospice for their help and unwavering support over the past year.
