John Lawrence Mellon, 84, went to Heaven with his Lord and Savior and was reunited with his son, Jonathan Aaron Mellon, on Sunday, December 28, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

John was born and raised in Ridgeley, WV, on May 6, 1941, to the late Marshall "Teddy" Mellon and Beulah (Stump) Mellon. John was a 1959 graduate of Fort Ashby High School. He was a proud US Airforce Veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era from 1962 – 1966. He retired in 2004 from the Western Maryland Correctional Institute as a Correctional Officer.

John is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 58 years, Bonnie J. (Landis) Mellon; their son, Jeffrey L. Mellon and wife Lorri; their daughter, Rhonda L. Strawderman and husband Larry; their grandchildren, Bradley Strawderman, Jacob Strawderman, Keirstan Riggleman, Savanah Mellon, Alyson Mellon, Whitney Richard, and Harley Mellon; great-grandchildren, Reagan, Hayden, Remington, Penelope, Brysten, and Ginny Lou; brother, Darl Mellon and wife Eunice; sister-in-law, Amelia (Harold) Twigg; two special nieces, Tonya Lantz and Tia Hill; and his best little fur buddy, Peanut. He also has many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and son, John is preceded in death by his brothers, Don Mellon and Dale Mellon; his sister, Jean Mellon; a very special uncle, LeRoy Mellon; his mother-in-law, G. Maxine Landis; and his sister-in-law, Wanda J. Sisk.

John, lovingly referred to by most as "Pappy", enjoyed every day to its fullest. He cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pappy loved to eat, especially a sweet treat. He enjoyed a good home-cooked meal, but also loved going out to eat. He loved the outdoors. He especially loved to garden and was always so proud of his vegetable garden. Pappy loved "porch sitting" with the love of his life, watching the birds and squirrels, and he always looked forward to hunting with his son, Jeff. John was a faithful member of the Potter's House Christian Fellowship.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the exceptional care from Dr. Q. Zaman and the Schwab Family Cancer Center. We would also like to thank a very special ER nurse, Zona "Donut", for her genuine care, compassion, and kindness.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD on Friday, January 2, 2026 from 6 to 8pm.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, January 3, at 11am. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Strawderman, Jacob Strawderman, Cory Riggleman, James Cotton, Kevin Adomnik, and Dave "Hatrack" Hedrick.
