CUMBERLAND – John Michael "Snook" Reitmeier, Sr., 88, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, May 20, 2024, at home.
Born September 8, 1935, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late John Leo Reitmeier and Nellie (Kocay) Reitmeier.
John was a 1953 graduate of Fort Hill High School. In 1957, he met the love of his life, Eleanor "Elly" Mercer, and on September 7, 1964, they were married. He served his country in the US Army, and he worked for the US Post Office for many years until retirement.
He belonged to the American Legion Post 13 for over 40 years. John was a lifetime member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club, where he especially enjoyed participating in lawn darts and ladder golf. He was also a lifetime member of the Goodfellowship Club and the Cresaptown Eagles – having received a Golden Eagle. John also liked spending time at the Rocky Gap Casino, shooting shuffleboard and pool, and cheering on his favorite baseball and football teams – the Orioles and the Steelers.
In addition to his family and friends, John was most proud of the Slo-Poke Softball League, which he started in the late 1960s.
John leaves behind his wife of nearly 60 years, Eleanor "Elly" D. (Mercer) Reitmeier; children, Jill M. Reitmeier, John M. Reitmeier, Jr. and wife Kellie, and Amy Stephens and husband Chuck; grandchildren, David Troutman, Heidi Reitmeier, Kelsee Lick and husband Tim, Josie Reitmeier, Jalea Stephens, Soraya Stephens and fiancé Jaylen Combs, and Chelsea Stephens and boyfriend Drew; great-grandchildren, Ryan VanMeter, Chance Troutman, Baylen Langan, Kai and Kaine Stephens, Luca Reitmeier, Levi Lick, and Sienna Troutman; brother, Paul Reitmeier and wife Shirley; sister, Norma Jean Clark; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends, Bill Allen, Gary Myers, and Bob Andrews.
In accordance with his wishes, John will be cremated.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 5 to 8pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday, May 24, 2024, at 11am. Military honors will be accorded at the church by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
Inurnment will be private at MD State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
The family would like to extend their immense gratitude to Dr. Mavromatis and all of the nurses in the Schwab Cancer Center, the nurses on 7 North at UPMC-Western Maryland, and the staff at the Wound Care Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to a charity of your choice.
