CUMBERLAND – John Austin Scarlett, Sr., 95, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at UPMC Western Maryland. Born June 6, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Franklin Leroy and Lena (Viola) Scarlett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily June Scarlett, who was a loving mother to his children; and two sisters, Nancy Rogan and Helen Arthur. Mr. Scarlett was a World War II veteran – a D-Day survivor in the 90th Infantry Division. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Scarlett retired from Burton's Clothing Store after 42 years of service. He enjoyed attending auctions to purchase unique items, and he liked to collect records. As a patent-holding inventor, Mr. Scarlett was always tinkering with new projects, staying active with his sons even in his later years. He is dearly loved by his surviving sons, John L. Scarlett, Tim D. Scarlett, and Gene L. Scarlett, all of Cumberland; step-daughter, Darlene Louise Alex; step-son, Robert Gene Whalley; numerous grandchildren. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. is entrusted with arrangements. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Scarlett's body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
