John Robert Szwast, 61, of Cresaptown, MD, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026 at UPMC Western Maryland.

Born September 6, 1964, he was the son of the late Anthony and Rose (Broad) Szwast.

Mr. Szwast was a graduate of Allegany High School. He attended Allegany Vocational Technical Center where he studied Electromechanical Technology. He worked at Rent America delivering furniture and appliances while attending ACC, where he graduated with an Associate's Degree in Electro-Mechanical Technology and Computer Science. He then worked for many years as an Information Technology Specialist at the Department of Energy in Germantown, MD, and U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, MD. In his younger days he enjoyed spelunking, coin collecting, whiffle ball, tennis, ping pong, baseball, and basketball.

Surviving are two brothers, Joe Szwast, Cresaptown and Lieutenant Commander Anthony Szwast, Jr, and wife Hilda, Summerville, SC; Uncle James Broad and wife Peggy of Cresson, PA; two nephews, Peter Gerard Szwast and wife Elizabeth with great niece Nora Ann, Cookville, TN, and Nicholas Anthony Szwast, Seminarian, of Boynton Beach, FL; two nieces, Eileen and husband Dylan Hearth, of Cresaptown, and Margaret and husband Giovani Thomas of Kent, OH; and numerous cousins.

Friends will be received Friday, August 28th from 10am to 12pm at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullin Hwy, SW, Cresaptown MD.

Followed by Mass of the Christian Burial beginning at 12:30pm at St. Patrick Church, 291 N Centre Street, Cumberland, MD celebrated by Fr. Stephen Fernandes, OFM, Cap.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, 13113 Warrior Dr, Cumberland, MD 21502 and would like to extend their gratitude for excellent care of their family over the years.
