Joseph "Joe" DeGiovanni, 86, of Rawlings, MD, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 3, 1938, in Carnegie, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph DeGiovanni and Irene Louise Riebling DeGiovanni. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings. Richard "Rik" Riebling and Donna McCartney.
Joe spent 37 years of his career at Allegany Ballistics (ABL) after earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA. Joe was truly a rocket scientist and worked alongside physicists, chemical, and mechanical engineers. During his time at ABL he signed up for night classes and between studies, extensive travel, and being a family man, he managed to graduate and earn a master's degree in management and business administration.
Joe had a plethora of hobbies and interests. As a young man he loved being part of the Boy Scouts and became a Life Scout. He was also into automobiles, electronics, caving, climbing, scuba diving, ham radios, building and flying model airplanes, guns, hunting and fishing. After moving to Maryland Joe was a Deputy Sheriff for Allegany County, a fireman for the LaVale Volunteer Fire Company and eventually a charter member of the Rawlings Volunteer Fire Company. Upon retirement from ABL Joe started his own clocksmith business and became a successful horologist. But above all, Joe was a musician and a true man of faith. He loved playing his keyboard, among many other instruments, and he loved sharing his musical talents with others. He was a member of several bands and loved playing wherever he could, especially at church with his fellow church members.
Joe is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" DeGiovanni of 63 years. Joe and Pat met in 1955, became best friends and married in 1962. They created a very loving family; Daughter, Karyn DeJong and husband Tarren with five grandchildren, Colleen, Tasha, Greyson, Brandon and Laine, and 3 great grandchildren, Gavin, Brody and Kate; Son, Gregory DeGiovanni and wife Jennifer with two grandchildren, Connor and Hailey; Son, Michael DeGiovanni and wife Candy with two grandchildren, Tia and Laurel.
In accordance with his wishes, Joe will be cremated and a celebration of life will be scheduled later.
In lieu of flowers, please send checks to UPMC Western Maryland Home Hospice, 12501 Willowbrook Road 3rd Floor, Cumberland, MD 21502, in remembrance of Joe DeGiovanni.
