Joyce Reid Goodman departed this life on January 7, 2022, in Cumberland, MD. Joyce was born on September 22, 1941, to the late Alma Goodman Wright. She received her education from RA Clement School, later moving to New York for a short time before relocating to Cumberland, MD, where she spent her adult life. In Cumberland, she was employed by the State in the Employment Security Division where she worked for 42 years before retiring. Joyce was faithful in returning every two years to the R.A. Clements School Reunion. The outdoors was a great part of her life; she loved gardening, and flowers, and feeding all outdoor animals. In addition to her mother, Joyce was preceded in death by her son, Keith Bates; two husbands, John Bates and Alfred Smith; sister, Margaret G. Carmichael; brothers, Herschelle Goodman and Danny Goodman; favorite niece, Sinitra C. Jackson. Joyce leaves behind to cherish her memory granddaughter, Destiny Alexander, of Fort Worth, TX; sisters, Delores Woods and Robin Pharr, of Salisbury, NC, Sonja Bryant, of Far Rockaway, NY, and Gladys Lytle, of Morganton, NC; a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins; special nephew, Reginald Woods (Jackie), of Concord, NC; caregiver and friend, Darlene York, of Cumberland, MD. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, from 12 to 1 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Park on Wednesday at 1:15 p.m.
